UNDERFACE by Shel Silverstein

Paraphrase

What people see is not like the inside me. The inside of me is a bit more depressing, but more like me.

Attitude

I feel kind of sad because it shows that people are not talking about their feelings with other people but instead hide them. :( The attitude of this poem is sad and honest.

 Shift

I think the shift is when he says, “But a whole lot more like me,” because it’s telling that when he is pretending to smile in front of people it isn’t himself, but his sad feelings are more like him.

 Opinion

I think it is a really nice and relatable poem to a lot of people. A lot of teenagers feel depressed, but when they’re outside with friends they hide it. I think the poem gives awareness to people.

 Recommendation

Yes, I would recommend this poem to friends because it spreads awareness and it might relate to them because I don’t know how they feel.
